Over the Hedge
Spring has sprung, and Verne and his woodland friends awaken from their long winter's nap to discover that a tall, green "thing" has mysteriously cropped up right through the middle of their home. Enter RJ, an opportunistic raccoon, who explains that the world beyond the hedge is the "gateway to the good life" where peculiar creatures called humans live to eat, rather than eat to live. Suspicious and even a little jealous of RJ, the ever-cautious Verne wants to keep his blended family safely on their side of the hedge. But, proving the adage that one man's garbage is another man's -- or rather animal's -- treasure, the manipulative RJ tries to convince the woodland band that there is little to fear and everything to gain from their over-indulgent new neighbors. Eventually, RJ and Verne form an unlikely friendship as they learn to co-exist with this strange new world called suburbia.

Leach Special Event
Hot Club of San Francisco The Hot Club of San Francisco presents "Silent Surrealism," an evening of silent surrealist films with live gypsy jazz at Leach Theatre. "Silent Surrealism" includes several short films by Charlie Bowers, James Sibley Watson and Harold Shaw. The Hot Club accompanies these films with the distinctive music made famous by Stephane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club de France. Sponsored by Public Radio KMST |
The Hot Club of San Francisco is an ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Hot Club de France. The ensemble borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist Paul Mehling. Hearing the ensemble live, or on any of their eleven albums, carries the listener back to the 1930’s and to the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris or the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for over eighteen years. Acoustic Guitar magazine hailed the group's playing as 'intricate, scorching and often brilliant…" Parisian coffee house reception following the performance. |

Happy Feet In the great nation of Emperor Penguins, deep in Antarctica, you are nobody unless you can sing--which is unfortunate for Mumble, who is the worst singer in the world. Mumble, who has a terrible singing voice, also discovers he has no Heartsong. However, Mumble has an astute talent for something that none of the penguins had ever seen before: tap dancing. Though Mumble's mom, Norma Jean, thinks this little habit is cute, his dad, Memphis, says it "just ain't penguin." Besides, they both know that, without a Heartsong, Mumble may never find true love. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria, happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange "hippity- hoppity" ways. Mumble is just too different--especially for Noah the Elder, the stern leader of Emperor Land, who ultimately casts him out of the community. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins--the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon, the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land, Mumble seeks the counsel of Lovelace the Guru, a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will answer any of life's questions for the price of a pebble. Together with Lovelace and the Amigos, Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and, after some epic encounters, proves that by being true to yourself, you can make all the difference in the world. Bob Milne Ragtime Piano Thursday, April 21, 2011 7:30 PM Tickets: $15 |
Bob Milne is considered to be the best ragtime/boogie-woogie pianist in the world. He is referred to as a “national treasure” by the Library of Congress. He has been called “the one and only,” and “the best in the world” by those who hear his concerts. His concert tours take him all over the globe, to small vintage opera houses and to large, prestigious concert halls. A French horn player in high school, Mr. Milne attended the prestigious Eastman School of Music at the age of 17, and then became Assistant First Horn in the Rochester Philharmonic at age 19. After symphony concerts, the students would hang out in local places. When the piano player didn’t show up at a sing-a-long saloon one night, Mr. Milne “filled in” and was hired on the spot. He continued playing the horn until age 21, and then became a full time piano player. Bob naturally progressed to the concert stage, sharing his love of music with audiences of all kinds. Mr. Milne is an active “Musical Ambassador” for the United States Department of State and has performed numerous times in Japan, the Okinawa Islands, and in this capacity for members of the Swiss Parliament at the U.S. Embassy in Bern. He has also performed three special concerts for President George H. W. Bush. Bob’s endless enthusiasm, enchanting ease of playing, his engaging manner while telling stories about the music, and his warmth and humor all come together to make him a musical ambassador to all. Whether performing in a concert hall or park gazebo, Bob works his magic, capturing the hearts of listeners wherever he goes. |

In 2001, a group of some of todays most exciting young string players envisioned the creation of a conductor-less chamber orchestra, based upon democratic principles, whose focus is purely on music making. This organic approach, their passion, and commitment resulted in the creation of ECCO. Its members are soloists, principals in major American orchestras, and marvelous chamber musicians. Translating this diversity of experience and virtuosity into a unified ensemble approach, ECCO combines the strength and power of an orchestral ensemble with the personal, intimate nature of chamber music.
